The Prefecture Apostolic of Kyoto was established on June 17, 1937 from the four prefectures of Kyoto, Nara, Mie and Shiga, which had belonged to the Diocese of Osaka. It was entrusted to the Maryknoll Fathers.

The first Prefect Apostolic was Monsignor Patrick Byrne, M.M. However, with his resignation in 1940, Father Furuya Yoshiyuki became prefect apostolic. On July 12, 1951, the prefenture apostolic was raised to the status of a diocese, and Monsignor Furuya was consecrated the first Bishop of Kyoto on September 21.

With the resignation of Bishop FuruyaIn 1976, Father Tanaka Ken'ichi was appointed Bishop of Kyoto and was consecrated on September 23.

Bishop Tanaka resigned for health reasons as of April 1, 1997, and Father Otsuka Yoshinao was ordained Bishop of Kyoto on May 25, 1997.
